Reception wikis

The term reception wiki refers to a type of wiki that developed in imitation of the Crappy Games Wiki. In general, these are wikis that are focused on pieces of media of a certain type that is regarded as either good or bad (e.g. crappy games or greatest movies) and provide lists of reasons for why each piece of media is good or bad. An exact definition of reception wiki is still under debate, and they have become a source of contention on Miraheze.

History[edit | edit source]

The Crappy Games Wiki was founded in 2013, and it was hosted on Wikia. An "Awesome Games Wiki" was started later to document video games that were considered good, and other wikis focusing on other type of media followed. In 2018, Fandom management decided to delete all their reception wikis, and many migrated to Miraheze, where they continued to proliferate. These caused contention among Miraheze users due to the creation of many especially low quality wikis, and, reportedly, for general drama. According to sources on Miraheze, there was a purge of low quality or problematic reception wikis in 2020.

Many of the larger reception wikis, represented by the short-lived "Qualitipedia network," were allowed to remain open. However, there were reports that they continued to experience drama and the addition of low-quality content.

Today, reception wikis are in decline due to a Miraheze policy of not allowing new reception wikis, and to the continued closure of existing wikis. However, they continue to be discussed on the Miraheze Meta. Notably, there was a recent request for comment regarding an official definition of reception wikis.

It is unclear if there is any significant activity of reception wikis outside of Miraheze.
