Gandalf (Quenya Olórin, Sindarin Mithrandir) is an Istar from the Undying Lands who was most known for going to Middle-earth in the Third Age to deal with the Sauron crisis. He was originally given the rank of "grey" and liked hanging out with Hobbits for some reason (believe it or not, he actually wasn't the weirdest out of the group), but got promoted to "white" after Saruman got deposed for getting corrupted. He was the most notable of the Istari because he convinced Bilbo to give the Ring to Frodo, formed the Fellowship, advised Théoden, saved Faramir, and led the West's assault against Morannon, which all led to the destruction of the Ring and the downfall of Sauron.

Gandalf was involved in a famous incident where he was in the ruins of Moria and told a Balrog of Morgoth "You shall not pass," but got knocked off a bridge but was saved by Eru and became Gandalf the White.
