Opening theory

Opening theory is when you study the moves and board positions possible in the first moves of a chess game, in order to learn what moves you should make in the first moves of a chess game to get yourself in a better position.

An advantage of opening theory is that you can use it to get into a good position in chess, that may help you win.

A disadvantage of opening theory is that it makes chess be about memorization and not about creativity or critical thinking. This is probably mostly true in the upper echelons of chess and is why Bobby Fischer hated chess.

Even Martin, a bot on Chess.com who is an infamously poor player, knows opening theory. He probably has a really bad search depth to make up for this.
